Comprehensive Banjo Book Being Re-Authored

2/28/2010

Back in 1969, I authored a comprehensive 3-finger Scruggs- and Stanley- style banjo book with 50 of the most popular breaks in Bluegrass music. They were written in a special tablature I had created and called "intelligent tablature". The book was accepted for publication by then manager, Eugene Frank, of Chapparell Music Publishing Company in NYC. Mr. Frank suggested that I co-author a book with another up-and-coming individual who had authored a book of guitar-picking tunes. His name was Jim Stafford. I was nervous about co-authoring with someone I didn't know, and in spite of all the requests made by Chapparell, being overly busy getting in to college, I declined the offer to publish.

The rest, shall we say, is history. Jim Stafford went on to be a very successful songwriter, musician, author and even actor. As for me, well....let's not go into that.

Well, all these years later, I've decided to self-publish the book and make it available to friends and fans at local Bluegrass Festivals I attend. I'm expecting to have the book ready in a few short months, since the bulk of it was written over 40 years ago. It will be available in limited runs, only. More on the book project as it matures.

"Thank You" to My Many Visitors!

In the month of February, my "Classical" page has had the most traffic. This was followed by the "Blog" page, then "Music Theory" and "Bluegrass and Fiddling". I'm delighted with the results. I've been able to answer several very interesting theory questions through my private email adirondackcomposer@hotmail.com and received lots of emails expressing appreciation for the site.

I invite those who are interested to take part in the "Survey" posted under the "Hobby Music" page. As with all data, other than emails containing addresses, everything is anonymous.

Thank You all for your continued interest in this website. I shall endeavor to make it even better.
Frederick Warner, Blogmaestro.

New Page Included About Adirondack and High Peaks Bluegrass Leagues

I've created a new page about the earliest history of the Adirondack Bluegrass League and its' sister organization, the High Peaks Bluegrass League which I founded less than two years after Hank and Irene Clothier started the ABL. Hold your cursor over the "Blog" page and a drop-down page will appear for you to "click" on. There's some great and interesting insight into how and when it all began. Enjoy!

Banjo Tablature Book Possibly Published by Spring

I am in the early stages of creating a collection of well-known and original banjo tunes in "intelligent banjo tablature." I call it "intelligent banjo tablature" because all of the information that a banjoist needs to play the tune is available at once on the tab. For example, the time signature, the key, the tuning, the chords, the fingering patterns, the note value, the slurs, slides, chokes, pull-offs, hammers, etc., all there.
I transcribed the tab years ago and then let it sit on the shelf - some of it thirty years - now, I think I'll actually publish it in-house through The Sound Mill and have it available at festivals. I just hope I have enough time to complete it without being distracted by other ambitions.
