The Elderly Mountain Boys
Back in May, 2012, I was asked by the management personnel at the Clinchfield Senior Center in Erwin, Tennessee (where Mary and I have memberships) if I would perform Bluegrass music occasionally at the Center. I thought it would be a lot of fun and willingly agreed. The next thing to do was to assemble a group of musicians who had fun playing bluegrass and who could play during the morning hours once in a while.
The first ones that came to mind all happily agreed to be a part of the group and thus "The Elderly Mountain Boys" group was born.
The band consists of seasoned musicians to be sure. Ron Duncan plays mostly mandolin with us, but he can play banjo, guitar and even fiddle and he must know several hundred Bluegrass songs. Next is Jerry Sams, another light-spirited, fun fellow to have around. He not only plays guitar and sings, but he actually knows how to build guitars and some beauties at that. Next is Warren Shelton, a wonderful man to have around who plays standup bass and sings Bluegrass really well. We always look forward to pickin' with Warren. Next is Tim Decker, the only member of the band still working for a living. He has been able, so far, to jockey his schedule around so that he's able to perform with us when asked to do so. Tim plays banjo, guitar, mandolin and sings high tenor very well. NOTE: Tim has withdrawn from this band due to his very busy work and performing schedules. Next, and last, is little old me. I mostly play banjo with this group but once in a while I'll saw out a fiddle tune or two. I sing the Dr. Ralph Stanley songs that I love so much.
It's a great mix of guys who all have a lot of fun playing. We look forward to playing for the Seniors.
Note: This band has pretty much morphed into "The Lonesome Road South" with members Jerry, Ron and yours truly.
